Sessions include:

Careers in Creative Industries
The University’s 3,000 creative industries students call our vibrant Cardiff Campus their home. In this session, students will learn more about the courses on offer – from drama, graphics and fashion design, to TV and film set design, music business and documentary photography - and how our state-of-the-art facilities and impressive industry links ensure that our students are ready to embark on a career in this billion-pound industry after graduation.

The Study of Cinema
The study of cinema exhibition offers us a fascinating insight into the unique relationship between the moving image and its audiences. This illustrated talk, suitable for students working in a wide range of subjects - including Film and Media, English, History and Sociology - will investigate the way in which our experience of cinema has developed from the very intimate and personal ‘peephole viewing’ of Edison’s kinetoscope to the truly social, immersive experiences we recognise today. We’ll take in the lavish 1,000+ seater auditorium or ‘dream palace’, the ‘drive-in’ popular with American youths, the bespoke movie theatre and the multiplex. And we’ll consider whether the increasingly popular ‘pop up’ cinema, site-specific screenings and the ‘open cinema’ movement (aimed at extending exhibition to excluded communities) is the future of independent cinema exhibition in the UK.

Making the News
Students will learn how to write a simple news story and publish it on social media, with a practising journalist and lecturer. All you need is a phone, and preferably a Twitter account. We will explain the basic structure of a news story, how to find a story, and get you writing and publishing one by the end of the session.

Going Viral
In this session we will consider the importance of advertising to media and the significance of social media in our everyday life. Looking at examples of memes and viral marketing, the session considers the importance of convergence culture and digital media. This session asks you to think about creating a viral marketing campaign, and to understand how and why certain forms of media ‘go viral’ in the contemporary digital media world.

Visual Media and Storytelling
Students will participate in a session on smart phone photography techniques and learn how to take great portraits with smart their phones. Students will also learn more about the knowledge and skills in all areas of storytelling and how to secure a career using their photojournalism skills.

Multimedia Stories
Students will learn how to work with ideas for multimedia stories from concept, to script, to production. Case studies and examples will focus on drama or factual video, including short form and promotional content. This reflects the breadth of the BA (Hons) Media Production course which aims to prepare students for commercially-viable work wherever visually-led storytellers are in demand.

Storyboard Workshop
Students will be given an overview of our BA (Hons) Advertising Design course, and will then develop a storyboard for a television advertisement in a fun and interactive workshop.

Focus on Auditions
What happens when you are called in for an audition? Your first reaction might be to get very nervous so, how can you use this to your advantage? Remember; nerves are normal! This workshop will invite you to recognise the blocks that all performers go through and incorporate them as a positive working tool to help you get closer to that job.

How to Read a Script (for radio/film/stage)
So, how exactly do we read a script? First, we need to note what type of script it is. Radio? Film? Stage? They are all formatted differently from each other but have one thing in common – a story! Reading scripts is vital toward immersing oneself in character and the scripted world. Finding the main plot is easy but what about the sub-plot? Character relationships? Physical traits? Emotional highs and lows? Comedic moments? This workshop will guide potential student writers/actors/directors toward digging deep into a text to study its structure, characters, themes, style and so forth.

Adaptation on the Stage
Introducing students to the wonderful world of adaptation. An interactive seminar exploring different approaches to adapting novels and stories for the stage and screen. This can also be offered as a workshop exploring one particular text and the possibilities of adapting it for the stage.

This Is Advertising
Students will learn about the creativity-driven advertising world and explore clever and fun examples of ads that capture the imagination. In teams, students will create their own ad based on the given prompts, developing their idea generation and creative thinking skills.
