If we want to meet our needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs, more environmentally friendly technologies are required urgently – and as an engineer, you could play a key role in their development.

Sustainable Development Goals are the blueprint we can use to achieve this better and more sustainable future. They address the global challenges we are currently facing, such as climate change, environmental degradation, clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy as well as responsible consumption and production, amongst others.

In this session Dr Sonia Melendi-Espina, Senior Lecturer in Engineering at UEA, will provide a background to the concept of sustainable development and an introduction to the environmental and resource implications of engineering activity within the context of sustainable development.

We’ll get you thinking about what sustainability in engineering can mean in practice and we’ll take a look at a case study on recycling carbon fibre composite from aircrafts to demonstrate the importance of innovation and efficient use of resources.

Our events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals, either from school or from home. This means that sessions will continue irrespective of possible school closures.

Suitable for: Year 12 & 13 (and equivalent) STEM students, as well as those with a potential interest in studying Engineering and those thinking about sustainability and their potential future contribution.
