International Women’s Day: Philosophy, Politics and Religion Online Taster

16:02-16:30: Religion taster session and Q&A
Is religion bad for women… or can they change it? We look at two traditions that are often considered ‘patriarchal’, Christianity and Islam, and consider how gender is being negotiated within them in modern, Western societies – and how religion changes in the process.

16:30-17:00: Politics taster session and Q&A
This session provides an insight into the world of decolonisation, politics and women by focusing on how women have been questioning what we consider to be ‘knowledge’ based on a Eurocentric account of whose knowledge counts. Politics helps us to think about the power-relations and colonial legacies that shape our understandings and responses to events happening around us.

17:00-17:28: Philosophy taster session and Q&A
This session will introduce one of the world’s first female philosophers – Sulabha from ancient India. We will look at what Sulabha says about how to make a philosophical argument, about how to lead a good life, and about gender equality – and what it all means for philosophy today.
