Subject Matters: The cause and effects of moral panics

Experience a taste of undergraduate and postgraduate study with our Subject Matters lecture series. During these sessions you’ll take part in a taster lecture delivered by one of our current students on a topic related to their degree. After the lecture there’ll also be time for a lively discussion and debate with fellow students.

Have you heard the term moral panic before but you’re not quite sure what it means? We’ll help give you a taste of what it involves – and what part the media plays in it – exploring issues like the lack of coverage on knife crime and how COVID-19’s been reported. Find out how it’s often connected with the values, safety and interests of particular communities and with society at large.

Join this lecture, hosted by Jasneth, a student on our Sociology and Social Policy BA (Hons), to discover how the media can cause moral panics – be prepared to have your preconceived ideas challenged and gain new perspectives.
