History Taster Lecture

World War One remade the map of Europe – the German, Russian, Ottoman, and Austro-Hungarian empires all perished. But what were its effects on Britain?

In this lecture Edmund Neill distinguishes between the short-term and long-term consequences of the war. He argues that the war had profound consequences on Britain’s economy and its political parties, and to some extent on its class structure.

By contrast, some of its most dramatic and immediate effects – on women, on state intervention, and through conscription – were much less significant over the longer term. Dr Neill will conclude the taster with some reflections on how the war has been commemorated.

This taster will also include an introductory overview of studying at NCH, and there will be ample time for Q&A with Faculty and Student Ambassadors.
