More than Skin Deep: Genetic Skin Disease (Year 12 and 13 Masterclass)

Skin disease is common. Over 50% of the UK population are affected by skin disease, and it is estimated over 1 in 10 GP consultations pertain to the skin. The often highly visible effects of skin disease can have a significant psychological and social impact. However, the accessibility of the skin also makes it an attractive field for research. Importantly, studies of rare inherited skin disease have advanced our understanding of the structure and function of the skin, informing therapeutic strategies to treat skin disorders and improve the quality of life for those affected.

The University hosts a highly specialised multi-disciplinary clinical service for a group of rare genetic blistering disorders collectively termed Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB). One focus of our basic scientific research seeks to characterise and explore the nature of microbes on the skin (the microbiome) and their interplay with the immune system in wound healing. This masterclass will discuss the nature of the disease including various facets of multi-system sequalae, as well as how our research endeavours will hopefully drive translational advances with novel therapeutic strategies in the near future.

Schools will be limited to 5 places for this class. Individual bookings can be made by students in Year 12 or 13.
