Full event details

This masterclass will be delivered by the University's Professor of Composition, Michael Zev Gordon. Students will listen to a performance of one of Michael's piano compositions, before listening to a talk about how he adapted, developed and rethought pre-existing melodies to create the piece. Students will then be tasked to start a free composition (a short gesture, phrase or section) using one or more of the techniques discussed. Students will work in small groups (supported by University students) and use practice rooms to complete the task. They will then have their work (in progress) performed and receive feedback, before listening to a short piece by a contemporary composer that also exemplifies the sorts of compositional process discussed.

Schools will be limited to 4 places for this class. Individual bookings can be made by students in Year 12 or 13.
