Full event details

This masterclass will provide an introduction to Materials Science and Engineering (MSE). Students will be asked what they think this is, before looking at smart materials and 3D printing.

In small groups, students will take part in a number of activities/demonstrations, for example learning about Shape memory alloys, UV-colour changing materials, D30 (a 'shear thickening' material), Ferrofluids, and 3D Doodle pens, where the students will have a go at making 3D objects by using what is essentially a handheld 3D printer.

After the students have completed the demonstrations/activities, the group will reconvene for discussion about the materials and the outlook for smart materials and materials science and engineering in the future (including potential career paths).

School bookings only. Schools will be limited to 5 places for this class.
