University event offered by University of Huddersfield
Short Session Delivered at your school/college
This talk will look at the factors contributing to flood risk in Jakarta, including rapid urbanisation, excessive extraction of groundwater, rising sea levels due to climate change and a decentralised administrative structure. It will consider how environmental factors and human behaviour have combined to create an existential threat to the city, but also recent efforts to protect the city and its population. The session will help Geography candidates understand how the viewpoints of different groups of people, potential conflicts of interest and other factors interact in the management of physical and human environments. It will address hydrology and fluvial geomorphology linked to the Ciliwung River Basin, the human impacts that have contributed to flood risk, and challenges in the management of urban settlements.
The Discover Programme consists of subject-specific lectures and workshops aimed at Year 12 or Year 1 college students, delivered by academics that teach at the University.
These sessions are designed to both complement the curriculum and introduce new subject areas.
