Institution Profile

Introduction to Salford

The University of Salford is located less than two miles from the city centre of Manchester in North West England. We offer a wide range of degree courses at Salford and our university is leading in areas such as health, media, energy, and the built environment. Our 20,000 students contribute enormously to the local economy and the courses they study on are designed with employment in mind, helping them and the economy obtain real-world skills. And of course, students have all the opportunities that Manchester – one of the UK’s fastest growing cities – has to offer, right on our doorstep.

Student Recruitment – Supporting your events

We have a dedicated Student Recruitment Team who work in partnership with schools, colleges, and careers services, raising awareness of Higher Education and the University itself. Our team are happy to support talks, fairs and workshops for years 12 and 13. We can tailor a range of student recruitment activities at your sixth form or College to the needs of your students, to help support them make important decisions about their future Higher Education and career choices. Our goal is to deliver impartial information, advice, and guidance, to ensure that students and their key influencers are aware of the choices that are available and that students are applying for the right courses for them. Please contact [email protected] should you be interested in booking any of the below sessions or developing something more bespoke with us.

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU:

Attending your University & Careers Fairs

If your school or college are planning to hold an event you would be more than welcome to get in contact with us and we can check our availability to support. We can deliver any of our higher education presentations at your events, as well as speak with students and parents/carers about opportunities offered here at the University of Salford.

We also attend a number of national UCAS Conventions and UK Higher Education Fairs throughout the year. They are an excellent opportunity for you and your students to meet us, ask any questions about our degree programmes and university life. A full list of events that we will be attending can be found on our website.

UNIVERSITY OF SALFORD TALKS

Providing timely information and advice can be hugely beneficial to Year 12 and Year 13 students as they make important decisions about their future. We have created our range of talks to inform and encourage students, aiding the transition into Higher Education. Examples of some of the talks we are able to provide are set out below:

/ Introduction to Higher Education

Your students will explore the value of a higher education qualification and learn how to choose from over 50,000 university courses. We can briefly introduce student finance and the UCAS process as well.

/ Personal Statements

This session uses real examples to help students identify what makes a good personal statement and how to start, structure and review their own. We can also offer general advice around preparing for course interviews, with a particular focus on building students’ confidence, and we’re happy to attend mock interview events if your school/college hosts them.

/ Student Finance & Budgeting

Students (and their supporters) often have many worries about student finance and budgeting. Along with information on loans and the application process, we encourage students to begin thinking about the outgoing costs of student living and how to successfully manage money at university.

/ Why Study at the University of Salford?

An introduction to the University of Salford enabling students to find out more about the course choices, facilities, accommodation, and support for students choosing to study here.

/ Preparing for your UCAS Fair

We know that large exhibitions can sometimes be daunting to students. This session discusses the right questions for students to ask themselves and to ask universities to ensure they find the right courses and institutions for them.

/ Student Life; Expectation vs Reality

Reflecting on their time at Salford, current undergraduate students discuss their personal experiences at the university, talk about their decision making process and the transition to higher education.

/ Study Skills

This Study Skills presentation will help students to develop learning strategies to boost revision and to provide essential preparation for exams. Students will be introduced to the Visual Auditory Reading Kinaesthetic model to help them to determine what style of learning they prefer.

/ Bespoke Subject Specific Talks

If you have a specific subject in mind we endeavour to tailor talks to the needs of your students. Please don't hesitate to inquire with your specific requirements.

/ Keeping your options open

Students aren’t always aware of all the different pathways available in higher education, or the differences between courses with/without pre-requisite study requirements. We encourage students to think about their university course options and offer advice on how to select alternative subjects to their current study.

/ Returning to study

We recognise that returning to study as an adult student can present its own challenges. That’s why we have designed a session dedicated to adults returning to education, including the opportunity for them to have a chat with current mature students at Salford.

/ Preparing for UCAS fairs

We know that large exhibitions can sometimes be daunting to students. This session discusses the right questions for students to ask themselves and to ask universities to ensure they find the right courses and institutions for them.

/ Applying through UCAS

In this session we will talk your students through the UCAS application, highlighting the key stages in the decision making process.

/ Late applications and UCAS extra

This session advises students of the opportunities that are available to them after the UCAS January deadline. If students have applied and are holding no offers, it also talks them through how to apply through UCAS Extra as another option.

/ Preparing for Results Day and Understanding Clearing

We’ve created a talk to advise students about their options in the run up to, and on, results day. We know there are lots of misconceptions around Confirmation and Clearing so this presentation will help them understand how the process works and address any worries they may have in advance.

If you’d like to know how our talks align with the Gatsby framework please get in touch with us on [email protected]
