Criminal Law: Streetlaw (Years 10 and 11 Masterclass)

Streetlaw is the name given to the form of public legal education which involves law students designing and running interactive, learner-centred workshops which help participants to understand their legal rights and legal responsibilities.

Birmingham Law School has a large Streetlaw programme which delivers workshops to a range of schools, community groups and other organisations. This masterclass is designed by law students and will focus on areas of criminal law which are particularly relevant to young people, such as joint enterprise, police stop and search powers or criminal sentencing. It will draw on resources such as videos, current news stories and events to explain the relevant law and put it into context. Students will engage in case studies, debate and discussion and may even be tasked with drafting their own law and/or sentencing guidelines in order to understand the moral, social and practical considerations that go into making the law.
