Maths and Statistics Taster Session - Exploring Number Theory

In this virtual session we will take a whistle-stop tour and rediscover some beautiful results from Number Theory from the last centuries, understand a little of their applications to cryptography, and finish with some modern number theory. Coined by Gauss ‘the queen of mathematics’, Number Theory has a rich history dating back thousands of years. Considered one of the purest forms of pure mathematics, what would have surprised Gauss is how a few of these results of Fermat, Euler and others would prove fundamental in applications in modern cryptography.

There will also be a chance for you to find out more about being a maths student at The University of Sheffield, and where a degree in maths can take you. You will hear from some of our current students who will all be on hand to answer any questions you might have about studying maths at university.
