'Exploring the relationship between creative and critical writing': Join us for a friendly online taster lecture to support your current studies and find out what it might be like to study creative writing at university.
Session time: Tuesday 3 October, 10.30-11.30
Dr Thomas Karshan is an Associate Professor at the University of East Anglia, a leading department in the UK for creative writing. He is an expert on Vladimir Nabokov, modernism, and the relation between creative and critical writing, which will be the subject of his talk.
How can you become a better literary critic by trying your hand at creative writing? And how can you develop as a creative writer by studying literature?
Before the twentieth century the distinction between creative writing and literary criticism was not so clear as it seems to us. Students imitated and re-wrote authors, in a technique called ‘imitatio’ which was central to Shakespeare’s education.
In this workshop, students will learn about and practice games of imitation, parody, and re-writing, showing students how they have formed the literature we study, and how they can use them in their own creation and criticism.
Suitable for: Year 12 & 13 students (and equivalent) studying, or with a possible interest in studying, literature, creative writing and related disciplines.
