Ancient Calculus

Have you ever wondered about the origins of a topic studied by millions of people all over the world? You may have been told that the discovery of calculus was due to Newton, and that it consists of his ‘limiting’ approach to finding derivatives. This is not quite right! Limiting arguments predate Newton and Liebniz by millennia, and calculus is in fact the systematic calculation of areas and volumes enabled by the astounding inverse relationship between differentiation and integration. In this lecture we will see an ancient limiting argument of outstanding beauty, and finish with a comprehensive understanding of what calculus really is. You will also have a chance to find out more about being a maths student at The University of Sheffield, and where a degree in maths can take you. You will hear from some of our current students who will all be on hand to answer any questions you might have about studying maths at university.
