Full event details

This four-day course is a stimulating summer experience designed for students in Year 12 (or equivalent), providing an immersive exploration of physics with a focus on astrophysics. The students will delve into the fascinating world of the cosmos and the fundamental principles of physics that underpin it. Through hands-on experiments, collaborative projects, and practical work, students will gain insight into university-level physics and the exciting field of astrophysics at Surrey.

What is it all about?

The course will run for four days during the summer, providing a real-world experience that mirrors the first-year undergraduate level at Surrey. Participants can expect a dynamic program that combines theoretical knowledge, practical work, and collaborative projects. The course will also incorporate a competitive element, where students will have the opportunity to apply their newfound knowledge and skills in engaging ways. Additionally, there will be outreach involvement with visits or virtual interactions with relevant organizations, providing insights into the practical applications of astrophysics and physics.

By the end of this course, participants will not only have a deeper understanding of the subject but will also have developed presentation skills, teamwork abilities, and a broader perspective on the academic and practical aspects of physics and astrophysics.

What will I be doing?

The course activities may include:

Astronomy and Stargazing: Explore the night sky, learn to identify celestial objects, and understand the fundamentals of observational astronomy.
Solar System Dynamics: Investigate the motion of planets, moons, and asteroids within our solar system.
Stellar Properties: Study the life cycles of stars, their classification, and the nuclear reactions powering them.
Cosmic Phenomena: Delve into black holes, supernovae, and the enigmatic phenomena of the universe.
Practical Labs: Engage in laboratory work, perform experiments, and apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios.
Astrophysics Projects: Collaborate on astrophysical research projects, encouraging teamwork and presentation skills.

Will this course suit me?

We encourage everyone who’s interested in Physics and Astronomy to be part of this. The Surrey Physics Academy aims to attract everyone who’s passionate about and related subjects who is looking for a challenging pre-university experience. Enthusiasm for practical work, problem-solving, and a willingness to collaborate with peers is essential. While there are no specific academic prerequisites, participants should have a genuine interest in physics and astrophysics.

Who will be on this course?

This is a mixed course for 30 students.
