Event Summary

This webinar is hosted by Jon Cheek, the Founder and Director of UniTasterDays who touches upon the guidance and help provided to students to help them make good choices when considering university. This is followed by three guest speakers who each talk about different aspects of university.

Session 1: Top tips when preparing your personal statement

The first guest speaker is Jen Birdsall, the Student Recruitment Officer at Lancaster University. She highlights the importance of your personal statement to universities, as in all cases that will be one of the key deciding factors admission tutors take into consideration when deciding to offer you a place. She explains what a personal statement is and how they are used by universities. This piece of writing is split up into different sections and Jen explores the different sections and what you are required to talk about in each. She provides tips on ways to make your application stand out and to show your genuine enthusiasm for the course you are applying for. It is important not to waffle but to keep it concise and Jen suggest ways to include enough detail without going off topic. She speaks about what percentage you need to dedicate to your introduction and conclusion and the best ways to formulate a concluding statement. Finally, she gives pointers on the personal statement as a whole to ensure it all comes together effectively.

Session 2: Making the most of a virtual open day

The second guest speaker is Lydia Mansell, the Regional Schools and Colleges Recruitment Coordinator at the University of Portsmouth. She explains what virtual open days are and how you are still able to receive an insight to university facilities online. She highlights the importance of attending a virtual tour before deciding on which university to go to see if it is the right fit for you. Lydia shares tips before signing up to a virtual tour, to make sure you get the most out of the experience and so you can narrow down and focus on your concerns/queries regarding that university. To prepare for this tour, she gives suggestions on what to focus on, what kind of questions to ask and the types of checklists you can make which will cover all aspects of university life. Finally, she runs through what to do when attending a virtual open day, what to have prepared beforehand, the important information to find out and questions to think about after the open day is over.

Session 3: Managing your studies from home

The third guest speaker is Craig Ferguson, the Student Recruitment Officer (Widening Participation) at Bishop Grosseteste University. Craig shares some top tips to make the most of working from home. He explains why it is important to continue studying even if colleges/sixth forms are closed and how you can effectively do this. It is hard to do so when lacking motivation but if you start by thinking about what you want to achieve, then working your way towards that will help keep your brain active and driven. This can be maintained in a range of ways, particularly online learning now that we are at home, suggests Craig. Even if you feel that you do not have much to do, Craig recommends many options to explore whilst at home which will help you both academically and personally.
