Full event details

Sociology is all around us, but how do sociologists study society? How does social theory help us to understand the complex social world we live in? A Sociology taster session will give you an exciting glimpse into how sociologists analyse society from gender and relationships to consumer culture and decolonisation.  These interactive sessions will give students a taste of what it’s like to study Sociology at university level. The sessions are suitable for both students who are doing a Sociology A-level and those who are new to the subject. Come with us as we explore the myths of the social world and deconstruct them into a new reality.

Available options:

Fandom and The Sociology of Consumption

Have you ever been a fan of a celebrity, football team, or music artist? This session looks at how people become fans, consumer cultures and the social practices of ‘being’ a fan.

Decolonising vs Modernity

The idea that Modernity is a western concept which embedded many of the ideas of empire. How is decolonising challenging some of those embedded ideas?

What Even Is Normal?

In this session we will explore the concept of the social norm, and how we define "normal" - and how asking the question "who gets to be normal?" gets to the core of our social identities today.

Masculinities

What does it mean to be man, and can this change? This session aims to explore the meaning of masculinity within Western cultures, investigating how it might (not) be changing and the impact this has on wider society.?

Gender and Relationships: who gets to do what?

This session looks at the role of gender in modern relationships – and asks how gender shapes what we expect from relationships.??

We are also able to develop and deliver sessions related to school/college curricula. Please enquire for more information.
