Full event details

This conference is part of a series funded by Health Education England (HEE) to help teachers and careers advisers to support students who wish to progress to university courses in medicine and other healthcare professions.

We recognise how difficult it can be to support students wishing to pursue medicine, as the preparation and application for this course is so demanding and so different from that for other university courses. As you may only have very small numbers of students with this course in mind, it is also difficult to justify spending time finding out the details.

The HEE-funded conferences have been set up to help teachers and advisers in your position. They will provide information on a wide range of healthcare and medicine-related pathways, including where your students can find information about the careers and courses, what kinds of things they need to do to prepare for an application, and how to give themselves the best chance of making a successful application.

Content of the Keele conference will include:

·      allied health professions: what are they, who does them, and what’s the difference between AHPs and doctors

·      pharmaceutical careers: pharmacy and laboratory-based pathways

·      other research & development pathways for students who don’t want patient-facing roles

·      typical entry requirements for various courses

·      how & what students on these courses actually learn

·      what to expect from interviews

·      preparing to apply for medicine and other healthcare profession courses

·      apprenticeship routes

·      medicine admissions tests

·      “work experience”

·      strategic applications for medicine

·       additional & alternative routes for disadvantaged students

·      medical career pathways: why medicine is a 10-year+ commitment
