What’s happening:
This online event will include a thought-provoking debate between two academics from two sides of the fence, Sarah Connelly, Lecturer in Criminology, and Jerry Pearson, Programme Leader in Professional Policing at the University of Sunderland.
The debate is around the use of, ‘Stop and Search’ by the police, as a tactic, in both England and Wales. Students will hear from academics, take a poll, discuss their viewpoints, and vote using their critical thinking. There will also be an opportunity for them to hear about the wide range of careers available and ask questions about criminology and professional policing.
Why this matters:
Students will hear two perspectives as to why Stop and Search is used in today’s criminal justice system. They will explore the impact of current police powers and societal responses to those and consider both the policing perspective and criminologist perspective.

Students will hear two conflicting viewpoints with opportunities to hear about real-life cases...
- Discussions on cases such as Bianca Williams and Ricardo Dos Santos, while looking at racial profiling.
- Find out about the objectives of the police and the importance of stop and search as a tactical approach. Should the police use more stop and searches or less?
- Both Sarah and Jerry will debate using case studies, data, and their own work-life experiences of working in the sector.
