Full event details

18th September: 13:45 - 14:30. Channel Talent Event.

Dr Horatio Boedihardjo is Associate Professor in the Department of Statistics at University of Warwick and joins us to present an interactive talk entitled Detecting Hidden Pattern Via Hypothesis Testing.

Some patterns in data are obvious while others are not. A sequence of Heads and Tails that is written by a person may look like one coming from genuine coin tosses, but from certain perspective they are clearly different. We will explore such questions using the idea of hypothesis testing from Statistics.

Our events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals, either from school or from home. There is no charge to take part.

As a live, participative event, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event, where available.

Suitable for: Key Stage 5 students (and equivalent) studying Mathematics, Statistics and related subjects. In addition to enriching students’ current studies, this is an ideal opportunity for anyone with a potential interest in studying Statistics at university.

Preparation/Pre-Reading: Students may wish to consider the topic in advance and can also think about questions they have about studying at university level.

The IT Setup: The event will be run on Zoom and participants will be able to join using laptops, tablets, and mobile devices. If you are joining as a school group, we recommend connecting with one device and projecting on to a whiteboard. You will be able to interact with the university via a microphone and/or typed comments and questions. Full details will be sent to those who have registered (see below) prior to the event.

Booking a Place: This is free for schools and colleges. Please click the link provided.
