Full event details

A glowing box of LEDs, brushed steel plates bolted to a floor, matt black motor casing at each joint, coloured wires laced throughout like nerves, all leading to a gripper that looks like it could crush a concrete block! That is often how we see and view robots, but what if I tell you that some robots can be squishy and soft? Would you believe me?

My name is Dr Alistair McConnell, an Associate Professor in Computer Science at Heriot-Watt University, and together we will explore the latest research in soft robotics. You will meet robots that are built from fabric which you can hug and keep you company, ones used by stroke survivors to help them with their rehabilitation exercises, some that are even able to grow and many more.
