Session time: 27 November, 11.10-11.55
In this Media session, Professor Su Holmes from the School of Media, Language and Communication Studies at University of East Anglia will run an interactive talk for students entitled From broadcasting schedules to algorithms: TV flow and its audiences.
With significant cultural and technological transformations in what we now understand by the term ‘television’, a key debate is the extent to which earlier approaches to the medium are still relevant in today’s digital landscape – in which the idea of ‘broadcast television’ appears to be in decline.
This session explores and evaluates this issue by focusing on the key concept of TV ‘flow’ (Williams, 1974). Focusing in particular on Netflix, the session will involve students in debating the significance of an apparent shift from ‘producer-controlled flow’ to a ‘viewer-controlled’ phase of flow – one seemingly shaped less by schedulers and producers and more by algorithms and viewer preferences.
To what extent do such contemporary forms of television give viewers more choice and power, and what do we mean by this?
Suitable for: Year 12 & 13 students (and equivalent) studying, or with a possible interest in studying, Media, TV, Film, Sociology and related disciplines. Student groups as well as students and teachers joining individually are very welcome.
