Join our online event to see how each subject approaches the recent high-profile topic of the early release of prisoners that’s attracted media attention due to its potential impact on the public. 

Join Dr William Webster and Dr Tom Rodgers as they discuss the processes that are followed when considering which prisoners should be released early and how this is perceived by the public. 

In Psychology we will: 

• Explore the purpose of treatment and risk-assessment in relation to the risk of reoffending 
• Consider how such information informs the decisions of those who decide whether a prisoner should be released early 
• Conclude whether further intervention is required within the community once a prisoner is released and discuss whether in such instances early release is appropriate

In Criminology we will: 

• Consider the ways in which public and political opinions shape the arguments for and against early prison release for public disorder offences 
• Take an in-depth look at the political, economic, and social pressures that influence debates around how to punish and manage public order offences 
• Conclude by asking if, given the financial and political strain on the UK criminal justice system, there are alternatives to the divisive ‘early release from prison’ decisions
