Session time: Thursday 23 January, 10.15-11.00

In this Religious Studies/Philosophy session, Dr Maria Serban, Lecturer in Philosophy in the School of Politics, Philosophy and Area Studies at University of East Anglia, will run an interactive talk for students on Religion & Euthanasia – The Ethics of End-of-Life Care – Understanding Modern Perspectives .

Join us for a discussion on one of medicine’s most challenging ethical debates: end-of-life care.

In this session we will examine how medical advances have shaped our understanding of what constitutes a ‘good death’ and the complex choices facing modern society. We’ll explore different approaches to end-of-life care, from palliative sedation to voluntary euthanasia, and examine how various Religions, including Catholicism, Protestantism and Buddhism, handle these sensitive decisions.

We will also challenge the stark contrast between society’s acceptance of euthanasia for pets and other animals, versus the ongoing ethical debates surrounding human end-of-life care. Through case studies and current legislation, you will get to explore the ethical principles that guide these crucial decisions.

Suitable for: Aged 16+ pre-university students studying, or with a possible interest in studying, Religious Studies/Philosophy and related disciplines. Student groups as well as students and teachers joining individually are very welcome.
