This session will introduce Literary Theory & the two broadest frameworks for conceptualizing Literary Theory: the 'extrinsic' and 'intrinsic'. Session A: 10.00 - 11.00am.
About the event:
The event is an ideal opportunity for Year 12 students researching their options and exploring what it's like to study at university level. It is also a great opportunity for Year 13 students who have not yet applied to university and mature students who are considering returning to learning. Unlike an Open Day, the whole Subject Showcase Day will be full of taster sessions for our subjects. Each session will last 1 hour, and students can attend several sessions. It's a great opportunity for students to explore what they might like to study at university.

English Literature: Introducing Literary Theory
The study of Literary Theory is the principal way in which undertaking an English Literature degree will differ from studying the subject at school. This session will introduce students to Literary Theory by (1) asking students to discuss and select a favourite from a range of anonymized definitions of literature, whose authors will then be revealed to them; and (2) showing the students how these definitions might be mapped onto the two broadest frameworks for conceptualizing Literary Theory: the 'extrinsic' and the 'intrinsic', as outlined by René Wellek and Austin Warren in their seminal Theory of Literature (1948).
