University event offered by University College London
Full Day
A one-day symposium for teachers from across London to explore working with students who speak heritage languages. Experience shows that valuing their first language contributes to students' sense of belonging and self-esteem. The symposium will feature several academic speakers, including UCL SSEES academic Ramona Gonzcol on our latest project with Romanian-speaking school children. There will be a roundtable activity and a panel discussion, plus a chance for networking.
The projects are run by UCL SSEES lecturers in collaboration with three secondary schools over four years, working with Romanian, Albanian, Bulgarian, and Ukrainian, and featuring guest languages Spanish and Portuguese. We will hear insights from one of these secondary schools about its approach to supporting heritage language speakers.
