This webinar is hosted by Jon Cheek, the Founder and Director of UniTasterDays. Guidance is provided for students to help them make good choices when considering university. The guest speakers for this event are Professor Polly Low, a Professor in the Department of Classics and Ancient History at Durham University, Justine T. Wolfenden, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Classics and Ancient History at Durham University and Dr Ian Goh, a Lecturer in Classics, Ancient History & Egyptology at Swansea University.

An introduction to classics and ancient history at university
Polly explains that at the heart of studying ancient history is Ancient Greece and Rome. She talks about the different topics you can cover and how this is a diverse degree with a lot of flexibility and choice. She goes on to speak about the types of modules on offer and why it is important to do your research before choosing a course that is right for you.

Most students opt to study only classics and ancient history but some may be interested in other subjects too. Polly explains what joint-honours degrees are and how your course is structured if you choose this option. Finally, she shares application tips and touches on the different ways you will be assessed on this degree.

Studying classics and ancient history
Ian speaks about the different routes into studying classics and ancient history at university. He explains how you are able to look into any aspect of ancient culture and talks about a broad range of modules based on your interests. Learning on this course will not only be theoretical but also practical. Ian talks about what object handling is and how you are then assessed based on your observations. He focuses on the opportunities you will have to engage critically and creatively on the course, whilst being assessed in a variety of ways. Finally, Ian touches on the skills you will develop on this degree which are highly valued by employers.

Justine looks at the employability prospects for classics and ancient history graduates. She talks about why it is important to do your research before deciding which course and university is the best for you. Not only will you gain specific skills related to your degree, but also transferable ones relevant for many sectors.

Justine speaks about these skills and why they are essential for increasing your career opportunities after you graduate. She looks at how this degree trains you for the working world and what the university offers to students in terms of career support. Finally, she touches on the many careers you can go into with a classics and ancient history degree.
