Immediate benefits of attending university

Most conversations about going to university focus on long-term benefits relating to the future: career prospects, employment, financial benefits. These conversations are important. It’s good to think about what’s ahead, and how university will benefit you.

However, you can gain many valuable personal experiences in the meantime, simply by attending university. This article looks at four reasons to consider university that offer immediate benefits, rather than future gain.

Gain independence at university

You’re an adult now. It’s time to spread your wings. Whether you stay at home or move out, this is your chance to gain independence, manage your finances, and do things for yourself without the help of your parents or guardians.

It can sound intimidating at first, but it’s great to be in complete control of your personal schedule. You can do things when you want and the way you want. Just make sure that your routine is healthy!

Make friends at university

Your university experience could be comparable to the television sitcom, F.R.I.E.N.D.S! You’ll gain friendships, build new networks, and meet a variety of other students through nights out, societies, or your course.

You'll also bond with the people under the same roof as you. As housemates, you might cook, study, and go out together. You might even be a great support to each other as you go on your university journey.

And don’t worry if you chose to live at home during your degree. You’ll still make close friends and form great memories.

Explore beyond your university

It’s your decision whether you stay at home, live in another place in the UK, or even move abroad for university. You could choose to switch it up entirely. You might move nearer the sea if you’re used to urban life, or swap your country lifestyle with the buzz of a new city.

Either way, during your free time, there is the opportunity to explore local areas surrounding the university. Take a look at TikTok to see what recommendations or hidden gems are in your area. Invite your friends to enrich your social life, or adventure alone to independent restaurants, shops, cultural spaces, and local parks. No two regions are the same.

Discover new hobbies at university

Outside of your studies, university gives you the possibility to join societies. Most are free or cost a very low fee to join. They’re usually run by students, so there’s a strong emphasis on the student voice when it comes to managing a society.

There's something for everyone. Think outside the box by trying something new, or continue with something you love. You could always try a mix. Why not join a sports team and a video-gaming society? The perfect balance of active and chilled.
