Short Session Delivered at your school/college
Rinderpest was a deadly disease of cattle with first descriptions of the disease going back to the Roman empire. Disease outbreaks were devastating: epidemics in the 19th century killed 80-90% of cattle in sub-Saharan Africa alone. In June 2011 rinderpest was declared globally eradicated, the second only disease after small pox. I will discuss the reasons behind this success story and the lessons learnt for the eradication of other viral diseases of human and veterinary importance and my contribution to the downfall of rinderpest.
The Discover Programme consists of subject-specific lectures and workshops aimed at Year 12 or Year 1 college students, delivered by academics that teach at the University.
These sessions are designed to both complement the curriculum and introduce new subject areas.
