About the University of Huddersfield

Our mission at the University of Huddersfield is to be an inspiring and innovative University of international renown. We’re based right in the town centre and at the heart of the community, and have around 20,000 students studying specialisms across a broad range of subject disciplines, from business, science and engineering, to education and healthcare, to the arts, media, and music.

Teaching staff

We are joint-first in the UK for the proportion of professionally-qualified teaching staff and were the inaugural university to achieve recognition of this.* 94% of our academic staff hold an appropriate teaching qualification.

In 2017, we won the first Global Teaching Excellence Award, and we’re one of the four leading institutions in the country for National Teaching Fellowships, awards which rate the UK’s best lecturers.

We’re unique in the fact that all of our permanent teaching staff have, or are completing, doctorates. This expertise, along with our teaching credentials, means that our students learn from knowledgeable and well-qualified teachers and academics who are at the forefront of their subject area.

Work placements

We’re also proud of the fact that all of our students have the opportunity to undertake professional work experience during their studies, and we’re top 15 in the UK for work placements**. Our emphasis on degrees that include industry experience means that our students have an advantage in the jobs market. 94.6% of our undergraduate students go on to work and/or further study within fifteen months of graduating***

Resources and facilities

To achieve great things at university, top class facilities and resources are essential. That’s why we’ve invested £156m in new buildings and facilities, such as the £30m Barbara Hepworth building. This is an exciting hub of creative studios and technology facilities and the home of art, design and architecture.

These are all part of our drive for teaching and learning excellence, which helps you achieve great things too.

* HESA – Initially awarded in 2016, maintained in 2017, 2018 and 2019. Joint first in 2020 and 2021.

** HESA Student Record 18/19

*** HESA Graduate Outcomes 2017/18, UK domiciled, UG, other activities excluded.
